California Pizza Kitchen History of a Concept

Aria Group Architects, Inc. has been instrumental in the design evolution of the California Pizza Kitchen concept for over two decades. In the 1990’s, CPK’s concept revolved around a strong “kitchen” atmosphere throughout their restaurants, as portrayed by a white, yellow and black tile, display kitchen and wood-burning Italian style pizza oven.

In the mid 2000’s Aria Group developed a new, more upscale look for the California Pizza Kitchen restaurants. The new design utilized natural materials such as stone, maple wood and glass tile with warmer colors. More dramatic lighting was added. The pizza oven and display kitchen were still features but a separate bar was added. This new style highlighted a stronger wine and liquor presence along with menu changes, which were geared toward increasing dinner and evening business.

Last year we were asked to create a third, entirely new design for this long-established concept. The new design plan features 3 distinct bars: separate pizza bar, liquor/wine bar and the food counter at the display cook line. The freshness of the herbs and vegetables used in the menu are featured in this design, with some actually grown on premises and visible to the patrons. The interior has reclaimed wood and a more upscale “California” color palette.

The design has been well-received by both patrons and employees. This year we were honored to receive the CPK 2013 Palm Award as the Supplier Partner of the Year. Over the past 21 years we have been privileged to help this brand evolve through the design of over 120 restaurants.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with California Pizza Kitchen by contributing quality architectural design to CPK's successful concept.
