Bringing an International gastropub restaurant to Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, Monnie Burke’s owners Anan and Margi Abu-Taleb asked Aria Group to assist with a renovation and addition to an existing building. This was our 3rd project with the Abu-Taleb’s and we were honored to be working with them again. The long rectangular footprint proved a challenge early on for maintaining the desired spatial quality we were looking for. After many discussions, the team decided that putting an addition on to the front of the existing building to add a large bar would be successful not only for expanding the interior but for also creating a large but intimate patio for patrons to enjoy.
For the building addition, we used salvaged Chicago common bricks and utilized traditional masonry detailing to create visual interest along 18th Street. To create a more dramatic volume, a new single sloped roof was installed, giving the new bar large and lofty energy. Oversized doors open up onto the patio which seats 175 and includes a fire pit and patio bar to enjoy Chicago’s warm nights.
For the interior design, Aria Group collaborated with Siren Betty to bring a warm, gastropub environment to life. Green painted paneling, patterned wallcovering, exposed brick and warm woods were central to the palette. To enhance the vibe of the space a variety of lighting was instrumental in creating a welcoming ambiance to enjoy a meal.
